Cape Town huffs and puffs to produce the fittest man, woman and team for 2013

31 January 2013

The Fittest in Cape Town competition took place this past weekend in what must surely be one of the most picturesque venues for an elite CrossFit event in the world – Camps Bay High School. With Table Mountain at its back and over-looking the beautiful Camps Bay coast line below, the event had no option but to be a resounding success. Split into three categories; Individual Male, Individual Female and Team, the event proved to be an action-packed two days never producing a dull moment. Coming out on the podium in their respective categories were as follows: Individual Male:   1. Nico van der Walt 2. Richard Smith 3. Charl Liversage Individual Female: 1. Mona Pretorius 2. Rika Diedericks 3. Gill Babour Team: 1. Team NECO 2. Team Sweat Monkeys 3. Team Xcite Fitness Bloem The competition kicked off early on Saturday morning with all competitors gathering on “The Battlefield” for a briefing on how the event will be run as well as some insight into the first of the weekend’s events. There was such an electric atmosphere out on the field as over 300 competitors prepared to take on the tasks ahead of them. With 310 athletes across all three categories registering for the event, it boasts being the largest independent event in Africa in terms of competitors – certainly a victory to strive for for the athletes! Over the ensuing two days the athletes were tested both physically and mentally in a variety of events designed to push their bodies to the absolute maximum. Event 3, the 7km mountain run was certainly one of these massive tests for the athletes – a 6am Sunday morning start in a howling gale. If this wasn’t enough, the first 2,5km of the run was a steep 350m rise from sea level, winding up Kloof Nek – enough to raise the heart rate of even the most hardcore CrossFit athlete! (Following this event the competition was moved indoors due to the strength of the wind!) Once the event was moved indoors the whole game seemed to change. Athletes seemed more nervous and focussed harder as the relatively small sports hall created a thunderous environment which seemed to fire up both spectators and athletes alike! The event organiser, head coach and owner of Cape CrossFit, Jobst Olschewski, managed to pull off a resoundingly successful weekend with the help of his entire crew from the Cape CrossFit box. Cape CrossFit, Powered by Reebok, managed to produce a polished and professional event that was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone who attended, whether competing or just experiencing the vibe created by the South African CrossFit community. Special mention must go out to the volunteers, judges and sponsors who gave up their time to ensure the event ran so smoothly. Without their time and effort the event would not have been possible. As CrossFit continues to grow and gather a greater following year-on-year in South Africa, and Globally, it is exciting to watch CrossFit change the bodies and lives of like-minded individuals. Whether your goal is to become the next Rich Froning or Annie Thorisdottir (Fittest Male and Female on the Planet), or you simply want to make the first steps to changing your life through the Sport of Fitness, Reebok is proud and privileged to take that first step with you.
