Cape CrossFit has kicked off its CCF Mini Wolves Program and you can get your kids in for free for the entire month of February!
CrossFit Kids has proven to not only be a great way for kids to have fun while becoming stronger, more coordinated and just better prepared for any physical challenges in life - it has also shown great results in terms of improving academic performance! These mini wolves train with Coach Tash and Coach Kelly every week at their school.[/caption] According to the The Lancet study, conducted by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington, South Africa has the highest overweight and obesity rate in sub-Saharan Africa. Seven out of 10 women and four out of 10 men in SA have significantly more body fat than what is deemed healthy. We are the fatties of Africa. The same study found that between 1980 and 2013, the prevalence of overweight or obese children and adolescents increased by nearly 50% and at present more than a quarter of girls and almost one in five boys in South Africa is overweight. What’s going on here folks? How are we letting ourselves and our kids down so badly? Exercise is essential for children’s health (NO WAYS? Really? I’m rolling my eyes by the way) but according to Professor Hans de Ridder, director of the School of Biokinetics, Recreation and Sport Science at the Potchefstroom Campus of the North-West University physical education is in an unacceptable state and lacking in South African schools. As a former Provincial Schools Hockey player and coach, I am only too aware of the positive impact that sport had in my life – from learning valuable life lessons to being able to appreciate what it means to have a healthy and capable body and most importantly: maintain it throughout your life. Given my love for sport, CrossFit and mini humans, it made perfect sense that I would focus my attention towards CrossFit Kids. I want to instill a lifelong love for movement and the body in each child I teach. CrossFit for kids? Now before your mind wanders to images of 6 year olds performing Deadlifts and Thrusters, let me explain what CrossFit Kids is and what CCF aims to accomplish with our CrossFit Kids Programme: We want to shape lives by creating a lifelong definition and love for fitness. We want to hone and develop life skills such as team work, confidence, acceptance and self pride. Not only are we teaching your kids how to pick up their school bags safely (there’s that deadlift ;) ), we are teaching them to support and encourage each other. We want to help children develop healthy habits by reinforcing commitment to regular activity and develop a healthy perception of self – it is not what you look like, it is what you do and are capable of achieving that matters. After all “a strong body makes a strong mind.” Now for the boring sciency bits: • Exercise can enhance scholastic performance • Aids in the generation and retention of nerve cells and neural pathways. • Aids in the transmission of neuro transmitters to the brain We focus on fun and quality of movements. Although it is based on the template of randomized, functional exercise done at high intensity , this is of course adjusted to the needs and requirements of children and teens. 15 year old Justin is gonna lift his elbows for me compared to 4 year old Cody who is going to pretend to shoot aliens out the sky with them ;) CrossFit Kids is “entirely and absolutely CrossFit, geared and designed for a special population and the specific developmental needs of that population," so if you are keen on seeing what the Cape CrossFit kids program can do for your kids please come in and try us out for a session or two. Right now we are letting any kids try out the two classes we offer in February completely without any fees or commitment. We just need you to let us know in advance when you want to bring the kids in. From March our kids program will carry a fee, but until then it's completely free to join so bring your own kids or kidnap your neighbours ones if you want them too to have a healthy and fun extra curriculum activity!
